Ludwig van Beethoven, A Brief Biography
Born in Bonn in 1770, he moved to Vienna and pursued a career as a musician there.
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the most important composers of all time.
His music is often considered to be a bridge between Classicism and Romanticism. An important patron of Beethoven was Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz. His Prague palace became a "de facto" Beethoven residence from the autumn of 1813, and the composer dedicated his opus 102, the set of variations on a theme from Handel's "Judas Maccabaeus", to him.
Beethoven had great admiration for Frederick William II and sent him copies of all his new works. In 1824 Beethoven, in dire financial straits, sold Lobkowitz a copy of his Triple Concerto for an exorbitant sum of 1,000 florins, promising him another (presumably a copy of the forthcoming Fourth) for no less than 800 florins.
It is unlikely that Beethoven ever composed any such work; he had not done so by 1824, when he was suddenly overwhelmed with orders for it from all parts of Europe, nor did he do so in 1825, when his output of string quartets was at its highest.
Ludwig van Beethoven composed his first symphony in 1799, which was followed by a string of compositions including sonatas, concertos, and works for piano. His most famous compositions include the Ninth Symphony (1824), the Fifth Symphony (1808), and the Third Piano Concerto (1801). In 1795, the Schuppanzigh Quartet was formed by a group of young musicians, with Count Andreas von Hoyos as the patron.
After the restoration of the Habsburg monarchy in 1804, Beethoven was encouraged to revise his Trios by Prince Lobkowitz , whose opinion carried particular weight. In addition to rescoring and revising the Trios, Beethoven introduced new material at this time. His most famous works are Fur Elise and Moonlight Sonata.
