Christina Judith Perri was born on August 19, 1986 in Pennsylvania and is an American singer-songwriter who became internationally known for her debut single 'Jar of Hearts', 'A Thousand Years' and 'Arms'.

Beginnings and private life

Perri grew up in Bensalem, a suburb of Philadelphia. Her father has Italian roots, her mother Polish roots. Perri started taking piano lessons at the age of eight; at the age of 16 she taught herself to play guitar by watching the guitarist of the group Blind Melon in a video. Since then she has written her own songs. Her older brother Nick Perri played as a guitarist in the rock bands Silvertide and Shinedown.

Perri attended Archbishop Ryan High School until 2004. After school she went on tour as an assistant with her brother's band until she received a scholarship to the renowned University of the Arts (Philadelphia).

After a year she stopped studying and spent some time in Italy to get to know her father's ancestral home. Perri moved to Los Angeles on her 21st birthday and married in the same year. After 18 months, the marriage divorced and Perri returned to Philadelphia, where she wrote the song Jar of Hearts in late 2009.

She returned to Los Angeles, worked as a waitress in a café during the day and recorded music videos in the evening, which she published on the video platform YouTube. In this way, a management in Hollywood finally became aware of the singer and contacted her via Facebook.

On December 12, 2017, she married her long-time friend Paul Costabile, with whom she had been engaged since June 2017.

A distinctive feature of Perris are her numerous tattoos, which she says is one of the methods for expressing herself alongside songwriting.

Career

Perri's breakthrough began with the performance of her song Jar of Hearts on the dance show So You Think You Can Dance on June 30, 2010. Her friend Keltie Colleen, a Canadian-born dancer and television presenter, had the song without Perri's knowledge to the choreographer of the show cleverly.

Perri and Colleen watched the performance in the audience. Following the broadcast, the song went straight to the Billboard Hot 100 and was sold 100,000 times within a month. Two weeks later the song was performed again on the show So You Think You Can Dance, this time sung live by Perri and accompanied on the piano.

On July 21, 2010, she, who is now managed by management agency Bill Silva, signed a record deal with Atlantic Records.
