Banjo - What is this Instrument and What does it Sound Like?
When people think of a stringed instrument, banjos aren't usually the first thing that comes to mind. With so many different types of music on the market these days, it's becoming harder and harder to keep up with what's popular, let alone find an instrument to learn to play!
The banjo is a stringed instrument that gets its name from it's relation to guitars. Banjos are actually three-stringed instruments, but unlike guitars, they have no frets. They are much smaller and lighter in weight than guitars, but they have a similar shape. Banjos have a long neck, with a fingerboard that rests against the player's arm when playing.
The strings on a banjo are like guitar strings in that they are arranged in multiples of three. The difference is that banjos have only two open strings, one for the highest part and the other for the lowest.
